화조도, 자연과의 조화를 추구하며 그리다
화조도는 꽃과 새를 소재로 그린 그림으로, 동양에서 가장 많이 그려진 그림 중 하나입니다. 우리나라에서는 고려시대 때 대두되어 조선시대에 특히 성행했습니다. 화원의 시험 소재이기도 했죠. 궁중화, 민화 그리고 장식요소까지 화조는 다양하게 쓰였습니다.
자연에 대한 세밀한 관찰과 표현이 돋보이는 화조도에서는 자연과의 조화를 이루는 삶을 추구하는 우리 조상의 가치관도 엿볼 수 있습니다.
Hwajo-Do, the pursuit of harmony with nature
Hwajo-Do is a painting of flowers and birds, and is one of the most popular forms of painting in the East. In Korea, it emerged during the Goryeo Dynasty and was especially popular during the Joseon Dynasty. It was also a test material for hwawon(court painters of Joseon Dynasty). Hwajo-Do was used in a variety of ways, including court paintings, folk paintings, and even decorative elements.
With their detailed observations and expressions of nature, Hwajo-Do also reveals the values of our ancestors, who sought to live in harmony with nature.

조선 백자에는 예(禮)를 중시하는 사회상과 담박한 절제미가 담겨 있습니다. 백토와 땔감이 많은 경기도 광주의 관요를 중심으로 백자가 생산되었죠. 세종 연간을 전후로는 귀한 청화안료가 들어와 청화백자 제작이 활발해졌습니다. 두 차례의 전란이 있었던 16~17세기 이후에는 철화백자도 만들어졌습니다. 다양하게 변화하고 쓰여온 우리의 백자는 지금까지 한국의 도자 문화를 대표하고 있습니다.

Joseon Baekja(white porcelain) reflects a society that emphasizes manners and modesty. The production of white porcelain is centered in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, where white clay and firewood are abundant. After the reign of King Sejong, the production of Cheonghwa Baekja(white porcelain with cobalt blue) increased due to the introduction of precious cobalt pigment. After two wars in the 16th and 17th centuries, Cheolhwa Baeja(white porcelains with underglaze iron-brown) was also made. Our white porcelain, which has been changed and used in various ways, has represented Korean ceramic culture until now.
