공연 <장인의 발걸음>은 전주에서만 만날 수 있는 무형유산 공연으로,
국가무형유산 선자장 김동식 장인의 삶을 판소리, 다큐, 로컬 디저트, 장인과의 만남으로 담아냈습니다.
STORY
부채의 고장, 전주
전주하면 한옥마을, 초코파이, 영화제 등 많은 게 떠오르는데요. 전주는 부채의 고장이기도 합니다.
전라감영 내 전문으로 부채를 만드는 선자청이 있었으며, 조선시대에는 규제가 생길 만큼 부채는 조선 선비들의 필수품이었습니다.
플라스틱 부채와 에어컨이 본격적으로 등장하기 전까지는 부채를 만드는 마을이 따로 있을 정도였죠.
지금은 부채의 사용도, 부채를 만드는 장인도 많이 사라졌습니다. 그럼에도 전통 부채의 아름다움과 기술은 ‘선자장’이라는 무형유산에 의해 오늘날까지 이어지고 있습니다.
Jeonju, the Home of the Fan
While Jeonju is widely known for its Hanok Village, Choco Pie, and film festival, it is also the historic home of the traditional fan.
During the Joseon Dynasty, fans were essential for scholars, leading to the establishment of specialized villages for their production, even before plastic fans and air conditioners became common.
Though fan use and the number of artisans have declined today, the beauty and techniques of traditional fan-making are preserved by Seonjajang(fan maker).

전주 대표 선자장 집안에서 자랐습니다. 아버지 김동식 보유자는 70년 가까이 아침부터 밤까지 묵묵히 부채를 만들고 있습니다. 김대성 이수자에게 아버지 김동식은 늘 묵묵히 일만 하시던 분으로 기억됩니다. 그는 그런 아버지처럼, 부채 하나하나에 최선을 다하고 있습니다. 아내 장현정 이수자와 함께 아버지의 길을 이어간 지 어느덧 10년이 넘었습니다.

To Dae-seong Kim, apprentice of Korea’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage Seonjajang(fan maker), his father Dong-sik Kim is remembered as a man of quiet dedication. Like his father, Kim devotes his full effort to each and every fan he makes. For over ten years, he has continued this path with his wife and fellow apprentice, Hyun-jung Jang, carrying on the legacy of his father’s craft.
History
존엄과 품격의 상징, 선(扇)
예부터 부채는 바람을 부친다는 기능도 있지만, 무엇보다 왕실과 귀족의 격식을 보여주는 상징이었습니다. 왕 뒤에서 부채를 부치는 것, 여름이 아니어도 부채를 들고 다니던 것 모두 격식을 위함이었죠.
또, 부채는 일상 속에서 햇볕을 막아주었고 전주에서는 1900년대 초반까지 부채가 특산품이었습니다.

Traditionally, fans were not only practical tools for creating a breeze but also symbols of status and dignity for royalty and the nobility.
The court ladies who waved fans behind the king and nobles carrying fans even in cooler weather reflect this tradition.
Fans were also protected from the sun in everyday life, and in Jeonju, fans were a specialty until the early 1900s.
